Learn How to Use the Synopses and Navigate the Website

General Tips:

  • This site is still a work in progress; there are bound to be errors
  • Please report errors / bugs to Daniel Christensen
  • The site is best viewed in Chrome, though Firefox and Safari do support most of the formatting
  • While mobile devices can display most synopses the site is best viewed on a larger screen, either a tablet or desktop
  • The site does not save cookies
  • In some cases it is necessary to refresh the page or clear your browser's memory to avoid conflicting formats; for now it is best to view the site in a private window

Title Image and Navigation

Previous

The "Previous" button will navigate to the prior Synopsis

  • Becasue the site is a work in progress, these buttons may not navigate to the synopsis directly before or after but simply to the next one in the order of the "Synopses Menu"

Each Synopsis has an image related to the text

  • The images are related but may not exactly match every pericope
  • Clicking on the image will open the source page
Next

The "Next" button will navigate to the subsequent Synopsis

Change Style Buttons

"Color Palettes" allow you to choose predefined color schemes for the text

  • "Plain Text" removes all color formating, this is the default setting
  • When a style is selected its color schema will be displayed in the "Choose Colors" pane
  • "Styles" has several color schemes
  • Primary: This is my preference for coloring the synopsis. It is used by Mark Goodacre in The Case Against Q (2001)
  • Farmer: Used by William Farmer in his Synopticon (1969)
  • Note that these styles are only following the color schemes of Goodacre and Farmer and do not necessarily match their selection of agreements betweeen the texts

"Choose Colors" allows you to create your own color scheme

  • Each button corresponds to a different match type between the Synoptic Gospels
  • Click on a dropdown arrow to select the color you want to correspond to a match type
  • Your selection will be displayed in the dropdown button
  • The "None" option will remove your color selection form that match type
  • You do not have to apply a color to each match type. This allows you to visualize relations between the text of a certain match type. For example, if you wanted to look at only the matching words between Matthew and Luke you would change all the match types to "None" and then set "Mt/Lk" to the color of your choice.
  • Your color selection will override any applied color schemes from the "Color Palettes" selector, including "Plain Text." To apply a new predefined color scheme after applying an individual color match you need to refresh the page.

The Texts

The "Texts" panes display the Gospel Pericope

Each pane displays:

  • The Biblical reference
  • Division by verses
  • A word count

How to interpret the coloring format

  • Each colored word displays two kinds of information: a match type in lemma, and a match type in text
  • A match type in Text is indicated by the color of the word, displayed in the "Choose Colors" panel above. E.g if the Mt/Lk selector is set to green, then a green εἶπεν would indicate this word appears in this form in both Matthew and Luke.
  • A match type in Lemma is indicated by the color of the underline. E.g. if the Mt/Lk selector is set to green and the Triple selector is set to black, then a green text color but black underline εἶπεν would indicate the word εἶπεν appears in Matthew and Luke, but its lexical form λέγω appears in Matthew, Luke, AND Mark.

Interactive Features

  • Hovering over a word will highlight that word in pink
  • The pink highlight will also be applied to the corresponding word across the Synoptic Gospels. Try hovering over the words in Matthew 9:6 and see how the matching phrases in Mark and Luke are also highlighted
  • Hovering over a word will also display that word's dictionary entry and parsing tag.
  • Parsing abbreviates are those used by BibleWorks 10.
  • Please Note: Not all the synopses listed on the site are fully supported for inter-textual referencing at this time
